Craig is the City Architect for the City of Perth and principal of Craig Smith Architect and is shortly to retire from the City position after twenty years.

He advises on all new development proposals in the City and conducts design reviews for projects in the City and State. Craig is a member of the working group for Local Planning Scheme 3, contributing to design guides and planning policies.

 His design project, “What If – Ideas for the City of Perth”, won the PIA Federal Minister’s Award.

His private work ranges through commercial, transport, schools, industrial and housing to mining, master planning and urban design. He is a member of the State Design Review Panel and chairs the South West Design Review Panel.

 In practice since 1980, he also taught at UWA until the 1990s, where he established the Housing Research Information Centre. He continues to tutor postgraduate students at Curtin University.

Craig has represented the Australian Institute of Architects at national level, in Public Affairs, Membership and Education, and on the Federal Government’s Development Assessment Forum.
